I am not sure if this will be of interest to anyone but I figured out I might as well write about it anyway. Maybe it will lead to some interesting discussion. If not then it will serve as explanation of why Rakuno as a monk won’t be showing up in screenshots so much in the future.

Job Point Category Description Effect per Tier Hundred Fists Effect: Increases physical accuracy while under the effects of Hundred Fists. Increase physical accuracy by 2. Monk Weapons, and Pugilist Weapons are various types of Hand-to-Hand combat and fist-assisting weapons. While these weapons can generally be used by either a Monk or a Pugilist, there are some exceptions - most notably the Relic Weapons, which can only be equipped by a Monk.
The choice to make Pugilist/Monk as a main was one that I made pretty much before I even started playing Final Fantasy XIV. It is just that I tend to be attracted in games to whatever class feels fun and different and monks tend to be pretty rare in MMORPGs or at least they used to be.
While I have been trying to clear dungeons through the Stormblood patches to keep up with the story and gear up I’ve been growing increasingly dissatisfied with my performance playing as a monk.
There is a lot to keep up with with that Job: the positionals, keeping up the greased lightning, stunning mobs so they don’t AOE and if the tank is a warrior keeping an eye on their TP bar to goad them. Not to mention the usual keeping out of AOEs and that the way people play dungeons it is just more efficient to have a Job with a lot of AOEs to help clear the trash mobs faster. AOEs are unfortunately not an area Monks are strong at.
Don’t get me wrong I am not saying there is anything particularly wrong with the Job or that it needs changes. I think it is fine as it is. What I am saying is that I am terrible at playing one and that is where my insatisfaction is coming from.

I also noticed that I seem to perform far better with a ranged Job. It is just easier for me to see what is going on in the battle and react appropriately.
With this in mind I am considering switching to a ranged Job for a main. I am just not sure which one yet. I might just temporarily go with Red Mage since it is 1) Fun 2) Already at level 70 3) Can start gearing up immediately.

The other candidate is Machinist since it is level 66 at the time of this writing. I’d consider Bard too but it is still level 32 or around there and I doubt I’d be able to get it to level 70 and gear it up before Shadowbringer is released. But it is definitely one choice I am considering for the long term.
Black Mage I haven’t unlocked yet and since I am not a fan of casters in general (Red Mage being the exception) it is unlikely I will consider it as a main Job. Dancer is a Job I will unlock when Shadowbringer releases too but so far I don’t see anything that makes me crazy about it. But if it proves to be fun I will consider it as well.
Also, whichever Job I end up switching to for my “main” one doesn’t mean I will never play Monk again. I still love it. I just will be leveling it as an alt Job and not invest as much time and effort into it as I’ve been doing so far.
For now I am just glad that we can unlock every Class/Jobs in one character in Final Fantasy XIV. That means I don’t have to lose all the progress I made with Rakuno so far.
